HONG KONG WIN FIRST LEG OF THE ASIA RUGBY SEVENS SERIES


Hong Kong kicked off their Asia Rugby Sevens Series 2024 campaign with a victory in Incheon, Korea. In the final, they defeated a much improved China 40-7. Host Korea beat Japan 12-0 to claim the third-place finish.

Hong Kong were in full of confidence on the opening day and won all their group matches. They displayed exceptional performance to top Pool B above Korea, Singapore, and the UAE. They continued the good run on the second day with a 24-12 win over Japan in the Cup semifinals. Hugo Stiles was the top point contributor for Hong Kong with 37 points.

China had an impressive run in Korea as they dominated Pool A with 3 wins. They beat Japan, Thailand and Malaysia before winning their semifinal clash against Korea. However, China were outclassed by Hong Kong in the final, but the improvement they showed was amazing. ZhiWen Yi was the star of the series after scoring 54 points for China with 8 tries and 7 conversions.

In the Women's Series, China clinched victory after thrashing Hong Kong 26-0 in the final. China beat Thailand 19-14 in the semifinals, while Hong Kong won 12-7 over Japan. Jiuli Liao of China and Minako Taniyama became the top point scorers with 31 points.

The Asia Rugby Sevens Series is the premier sevens tournament for rugby in Asia. The second leg of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series will be held in China on 21-22 September 2024. The series features the top eight men and women teams in Asia.
