South Africa and New Zealand delivered unforgettable performances in New York, claiming dramatic victories to crown a thrilling HSBC SVNS Series season.
The Blitzboks edged Fiji 10–7 in a gripping men’s final to secure both the tournament gold and the overall series title. With everything on the line, South Africa struck first as captain Impi Visser marked his milestone 50th tournament by setting up Gino Cupido for the opening try. Tristan Leyds added another before Fiji responded through Terio Veilawa to set up a tense finish. Under immense pressure, the Blitzboks held firm with outstanding defence to seal the win, adding New York to their titles in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver. Selvyn Davids was named Player of the Final.
In the women’s competition, New Zealand’s Black Ferns Sevens produced yet another statement performance, edging Australia 22–21 in a breathtaking final. Already confirmed as overall series champions, New Zealand showed their class once again with tries from Kelsey Teneti, Alena Saili and Katelyn Vahaakolo. Australia pushed them all the way, but the Black Ferns held on to secure their fifth title of the season.
With the regular series complete, attention now shifts to Hong Kong, where the Championship will bring together the world’s best once again.
