RUGBY NEEDS NEW WINNERS TO INSPIRE THE WORLD

Rugby is a game built on courage, teamwork, and respect. Fifteen players uniting for one purpose. Yet, despite its spirit, rugby still ranks only eighth or ninth among the world’s most popular sports. That’s not where a sport of such passion should be. Even individual sports like tennis and golf enjoy larger global appeal.

One key reason: too few countries have tasted glory. Since the Rugby World Cup began in 1987, only four nations have ever won it. And as we head toward the 2027 World Cup with 24 teams, that means 20 countries will be chasing a dream that has never come true for them. Compare that to football, where more nations have shared the joy of becoming world champions. And you can see why rugby’s global reach remains limited.

Fans love unpredictability. They want new heroes, new nations to believe in. If a team outside the traditional powerhouses, maybe from the Americas, Asia, or Eastern Europe could win or even reach the final, the impact would be huge. Imagine how it could inspire new fans, new players, and new sponsors around the world.

Rugby has everything it needs to grow. Heart, history, and humanity. What it needs now is hope. Hope that one day, the Webb Ellis Cup will rise in new hands, in a new land, carrying the dreams of millions more. That’s how rugby truly becomes global.
