Malaysia delivered a moment of belief and breakthrough at the Singapore National Stadium on January 31, rewriting the script of South-east Asian rugby sevens with a stirring 10–5 victory over Thailand in the men’s final. Coming in as underdogs after finishing fourth at the recent SEA Games, the Bunga Raya 7s showed heart, belief and resilience to overturn defending champions Thailand and reclaim regional pride on Singapore soil.

Thailand struck first, but Malaysia refused to be shaken. Led by captain Azwan Zuwairi Mat Zizi, the team dug deep, blending the experience of SEA Games campaigners with the fearless energy of emerging talents. Their comeback captured the hunger within the squad and delivered sweet revenge for last month’s disappointment, proving how quickly belief and unity can shift momentum.

While Malaysia celebrated in the men’s competition, Thailand’s women responded with authority. Fuelled by confidence gained from the Challenger Series, they swept past Malaysia 41–0 to reclaim the South East Asia Sevens (SEA 7s) crown for the first time since 2024. Captain Phonnapha Nartsopha credited teamwork, cohesion and momentum for the emphatic triumph.

Malaysia women’s captain Kajolin Jenisin remained upbeat despite defeat, emphasising development over results, with a youthful squad gaining invaluable experience on a major stage.

Hosts Singapore also featured prominently, with both their men’s and women’s teams finishing third this year after podium-topping performances in 2025. Staged alongside the HSBC SVNS Singapore 2026, the SEA 7s thrived in the global spotlight, celebrating regional progress while the world’s elite prepared to take centre stage.
