A truly global cast will take centre stage as World Rugby launches its new three-tier sevens system, with emerging nations given a golden opportunity to climb the international ladder. Women’s teams from Argentina, Colombia, Czechia, Mexico, Poland, Samoa, South Africa and Thailand will be joined by men’s sides from Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Hong Kong, Italy, Madagascar, Samoa and Tonga, all chasing momentum and meaningful progress.
This weekend’s stakes are clear. The top two men’s and women’s teams will earn promotion to the three-leg HSBC SVNS 2 series in Nairobi, Montevideo and São Paulo in February and March. There, they will be tested against established sevens powers such as Kenya, Uruguay and USA, offering a true measure of their ambitions.
Beyond that lies an even bigger prize. Across the pathway, 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams will battle for a top-four finish and a place in the elite HSBC SVNS World Championship Series, spanning Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux.
Argentina captain Paula Pedrozo summed up the mood: focused, ambitious and hungry. As Spain’s remarkable rise last season proved, strong performances at this level can transform teams into genuine world contenders.
