Brazil delivered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in HSBC SVNS history, defying the odds in São Paulo to secure a sensational place in the World Championship Series.
Everything came down to the final match of the three-leg SVNS 2 campaign, with the hosts needing victory to leapfrog China and claim the last qualifying spot. Rising to the occasion, Brazil’s women, known as As Yaras produced a superb performance to defeat Kenya 24–12, sparking wild celebrations among the home crowd. Camilla Carvalho struck twice in the first half, before Player of the Tournament Thalia Costa sealed the dream with two decisive second-half tries.
Earlier, Brazil had shown their intent with a dominant 38–7 victory over Spain, setting up a dramatic winner-takes-all finale. The triumph capped an incredible journey, as Brazil joined Argentina, South Africa and Spain in the upcoming World Championship Series.
In the men’s competition, Uruguay showed great determination to secure the final qualification spot after a tense win over Belgium. Meanwhile, Belgium claimed the São Paulo title after results elsewhere went their way, rounding off a thrilling tournament.
With qualification decided in the final match, the stage is now set for an electrifying World Championship Series, kicking off in Hong Kong, where the world’s best will clash once again.
In the men’s draw, qualifiers USA, Germany, Kenya and Uruguay will join core teams South Africa, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, France, Argentina, Spain and Great Britain.
In the women’s competition, Argentina, Spain, South Africa and Brazil will line up alongside New Zealand, Australia, USA, France, Canada, Fiji, Japan and Great Britain.
