Portugal produced a stunning upset to dethrone Georgia 19–17 and capture the Rugby Europe Championship title in a pulsating final in Spain on Sunday.
Long dominated by Georgia, the competition witnessed a shift in power as Portugal delivered a fearless and resilient performance, highlighted by outstanding defence and late-game composure. It marked their first victory over Georgia since 2005 and their first major European title in over two decades.
Georgia looked in control early, building a 12–3 halftime lead through tries from Ilia Spanderashvili and Tornike Jalagonia. Even when reduced to 14 men, Portugal stayed within touching distance, relying on the accurate boot of Manuel Vareiro to keep the scoreboard ticking.
When Beka Gorgadze extended Georgia’s lead to 17–9 with 14 minutes remaining, the title seemed out of reach. But Portugal refused to fade. A crucial penalty narrowed the gap before a yellow card to Georgia proved decisive.
Moments later, Hugo Camacho’s sharp pass sent Vincent Pinto over for a dramatic match-winning try. Portugal held firm under immense late pressure, sealing a famous victory that could redefine their rugby future.
