HONG KONG BEAT JAPAN TO KEEP PERFECT RECORD

The first chapter of the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Series 2026 ended with drama, comebacks and another statement from the defending champions.

Hong Kong continued their remarkable undefeated run in Asian sevens, defeating Japan 19-7 in the Men’s Cup Final in Suzhou, China.

Japan started brightly and struck first, but Hong Kong refused to panic. The champions turned up the intensity after the break, scoring three tries through Callum McCullough, Julien Bourron and Liam Herbert to complete another memorable comeback.

China thrilled the home crowd by defeating Korea 24-19 in golden-point extra time to claim bronze. Korea produced a stunning finish, scoring after the hooter to force extra time, but China struck first to secure a dramatic victory on home soil.

Thailand edged UAE 17-14 for fifth, while Sri Lanka defeated Malaysia 36-5 to finish seventh.

After an action-packed opening round, Hong Kong lead the standings with 20 points, followed by Japan on 18 and China on 16..

But the story is far from over. The Series now moves to Colombo, Sri Lanka, in October, where rivalries will resume and every point will matter.

Suzhou has set the stage. Colombo will decide who finishes on top.
