BEYOND RUGBY, SONNY BILL WILLIAMS FIGHTS FOR LIFE

For years, Sonny Bill Williams stood as a symbol of strength, courage and determination. A rugby superstar, heavyweight boxer and two-time Rugby World Cup champion, he had conquered some of the toughest challenges in sport. But in October 2026, the world learned that his greatest battle was taking place far away from the rugby field.

Earlier this year, a routine medical check following neck surgery revealed a congenital heart defect known as a bicuspid aortic valve. Despite his extraordinary fitness, Williams was facing a potentially life-threatening condition.

Doctors performed the Ross procedure, a complex open-heart operation that replaced his damaged aortic valve with his pulmonary valve, using donor tissue to replace the latter.

The road to recovery was gruelling. Williams described it as one of the hardest experiences of his life. For a man accustomed to physical battles, this was a different kind of fight, one demanding patience, faith and resilience.

Throughout his journey, his Islamic faith has remained a cornerstone of his life. Since embracing Islam in 2009, Williams has often spoken about how it transformed him from a reckless young man into a devoted husband, father and grounded individual.

Now, recovering at home with his family, Williams is turning his frightening experience into a powerful message for others. He urges people to undergo routine heart health checks, reminding the world that even elite athletes can carry hidden conditions.

His story is a reminder that champions are not defined only by victories, trophies or medals.

Sometimes, the greatest victory is simply being given another chance at life.

And for Sonny Bill Williams, the fight continues, with faith in his heart and his family by his side.
